Pause, rewind, fast forward: A birthday retrospective commemorating the 1867 building of the first permanent schoolhouse in San Ramon

FullSizeRender

Pause for a moment and hit rewind

photographs memories and storylines

You’ll have to go back 150 years to find

the roots of today’s celebration…

Once dreamers and schemers and pioneers

staked their claim to the future, not the past

establishing community within schoolhouse walls

with grassroots wisdom passed along

one generation to the next then the next

moment after moment in time

That’s why we gather here this day

to offer thanks to each of those

who chose to stay and build and grow

San Ramon, the place we call home

they did it with bravery faith hope and love

though they couldn’t foresee the world we now know

So while we pause to give thanks for our history

Let’s fast forward through time

to imagine our city in the next 150

the year will be twenty one sixty seven

how much will the story have changed by then?

a lifetime we can’t even fathom

Who will be our descendants,

future San Ramon city celebrants

marking time when they hit pause themselves?

they’ll give thanks and remember

how it started and grew

strengthened through time and good planning

our legacy rooted in stories unknown

past present and future entwined, ever new

History unfolds. History repeats. History endures.

History is alive.

Happy 150th Birthday, San Ramon.
